AudioBits

Optional local MCP tooling

Extend complex agent workflows with local catalog discovery and installed-runtime validation.

Normal AudioBits use needs no MCP server. The official Skill works with public exports and ordinary coding tools. MCP can help with repeated recipe validation, catalog discovery, or comparisons between catalog requirements and an installed runtime.

The Skill includes a self-contained Node.js ESM stdio executable at scripts/mcp.mjs. Its server dependencies and offline catalog metadata are bundled; the AudioBits runtime comes from your consumer project. No monorepo checkout, cloud account, or background service is required. Installing the Skill does not register or start this server.

Supported tools

ToolPurpose
inspect_projectReport the installed runtime version, schema, capabilities, and diagnostics.
search_catalogSearch offline catalog metadata by query or category.
get_catalog_itemReturn an item's metadata, declared source manifest, install commands, and requirements. Optional sourcePaths explicitly retrieves declared source files.
validate_recipeValidate JSON recipe data with the consumer's installed runtime.
check_compatibilityCompare an item's declared requirements with installed schema and capabilities.

Inspect the connected server's actual tool schemas before calling. Runtime tools accept projectPath, overriding the launch default. Select a trusted project root containing package.json and node_modules/audiobits. Resolution does not fall back to an ancestor project or the server's dependencies. Package-manager symlinks work; Yarn PnP without node_modules is unsupported.

Catalog search and metadata are offline. Only an explicit sourcePaths request on get_catalog_item may retrieve declared public GitHub source, with size and hash checks. Returned source is review material; the server never installs or executes it. Install reviewed source through the registry workflow.

Configure a local client

Prepare the Skill and consumer project

Install the Skill and install audiobits in your consumer project if needed, using the runtime quick start. Use Node 24.21.0 or later in the 24.x series for the server. Other Node series are unverified.

Resolve the local launch command

Find the actual installed Skill directory in the CLI output or your agent's inventory. From your consumer project, run the read-only helper below, replacing /path/to/installed/audiobits with that directory.

node "/path/to/installed/audiobits/scripts/setup-mcp.mjs" --project "$PWD"

The helper resolves local Node, Skill script, and consumer paths and prints a JSON object with command and args. It never writes configuration or starts the server. The arguments include the installed scripts/mcp.mjs executable and --project with your consumer root, so clients without a configurable working directory can still resolve that project.

Register with your MCP client

Inspect your MCP client's existing registrations, configuration scope, and supported local stdio mechanism. Reuse an existing AudioBits registration when appropriate. Register the helper's exact command and args through the client's documented configuration mechanism, preserving unrelated settings.

Configuration formats differ across clients. Use your client's help or documentation rather than assuming a shared config path or schema. Keep resolved personal paths in local configuration. The client owns the stdio process and closes it on EOF; launch the executable directly, since package-manager banners can contaminate protocol stdout.

Verify the selected runtime

Reload the client if required, confirm connectivity and tool discovery, then call inspect_project to verify that it resolves the intended runtime.

Continue without MCP when needed

If your client cannot register or connect to the server, continue with public exports and the Skill's normal workflow.

Verification limits

The server imports the trusted installed runtime in a worker for validation. The worker isolates output and lifecycle, not untrusted installed code. Compatibility checks compare declared schema and capabilities. They do not typecheck your application, render browser audio, or verify gesture activation, Stop, hiding, and cleanup. Run application checks and relevant browser checks after integration; AudioBits automated browser evidence targets Chromium.

For exact setup behavior, see the Skill tooling reference. For development of the server itself, see tools/mcp/.
